What Are Training Walks? Helping Your Dog Become the Super Dog They're Capable of Being
Many dog owners struggle on their walks every day. It might be lead pulling, poor recall, reactivity, or a dog that feels nervous in the outside world.
Are you one of these people, or do you know someone who is struggling on walks?
Maybe your dog is pulling so hard it feels like your arms are being ripped out of their sockets. Maybe you're calling their name or blowing your whistle while your dog is nowhere to be seen. Or perhaps your dog barks at every dog or person that walks past.
These aren't the relaxing, enjoyable walks we imagine when we first get a dog. Instead, they can start to feel like something we have to do rather than something we want to do.
If any of this sounds familiar, you're definitely not alone.
But what if we could turn those everyday walks into valuable training opportunities?
What if those same walks could help your dog learn the skills they need to become the Super Dog they’re capable of being?
Like people, dogs need time to learn, practise, and improve their skills — they’re not born knowing what we expect from them.
We can’t expect dogs to already have the knowledge or behaviours we want. It’s our job to teach them, guide them, and help them understand. And just like with us, this doesn’t happen overnight — it takes time, patience, and consistency.
Sometimes, having the support of a professional can make all the difference. Someone who can guide you, share their knowledge, and help you move forward in the right direction.
That’s where training walks come in.
They give you and your dog the opportunity to learn and practise real-life skills, with the support and guidance of a professional, helping you work through the challenges you face on everyday walks.
Now you're probably wondering, what are training walks? And what makes them different from 1-2-1 training?
While the two are very similar, there are two main differences: whether you can be there when the training is taking place and when the sessions happen.
The other differences are much smaller, but the training itself is very much the same.
Now let's dive into what those differences are.
One of the main differences is whether you can be there during the training sessions, and the short answer is yes and no.
What I mean by that is that training walks are primarily designed so that you don't have to be there for the sessions, but your dog is still getting the training they need.
This doesn't mean you can't be part of the process. In fact, I encourage you to attend a session where possible so you can see what's being done, ask any questions you may have, and get some practice in yourself.
The next big difference is when the sessions take place.
Training walks can happen while you're at work or busy with other commitments, meaning you don't have to find a time that works for your schedule.
Instead, while you're getting on with your day, I'll come and collect your dog from your house and carry out the training session.
That means no trying to squeeze another appointment into your diary and no worrying about finding a spare hour in your week. Your dog can continue building their skills while you focus on everything else life throws your way.
The other difference is how you know what's being taught to your dog when you're not there.
During a 1-2-1 session, you get to see the training first-hand. Not only do you see what's being taught, but you also get the opportunity to practise it yourself during the session. Afterwards, you'll receive a write-up as a reminder of what you covered and something you can refer back to later.
With training walks, things work slightly differently. As you're not there to see the session in person, you'll receive a video of the training (conditions permitting), along with a brief summary and a write-up explaining what was worked on and how your dog got on during the session.
That way, even if you can't attend, you're still able to follow your dog's progress and understand what they're learning.
Who are training walks for? Are they just for people who can't commit to 1-2-1 sessions?
The answer is no. Training walks are for anyone.
They aren't just for people who are unable to commit to 1-2-1 training. They're also for anyone who feels like they need an extra helping hand with their dog's training, or for people who feel like they've hit a wall and need help getting their dog back on track.
They can also be a great option for owners who want to help their dog progress to the next stage of their training journey and move closer towards their end goals.
Sometimes all a dog needs is a little extra practice, consistency, and guidance to unlock the next step in their development.
At this point you're probably wondering, what can training walks help with?
Have you ever wanted your dog to have better recall? Walk on a loose lead without ripping your arm out? Focus on you when you're out and about? Be more confident in certain situations? Or do you have a niche problem that Google doesn't really seem to have an answer for?
Then training walks might be exactly what you're looking for.
They can help with almost any area of training you want to work on or improve. There is no challenge too big or too small because every dog is different, and every training journey is unique.
After all, it's not just a walk. It's an opportunity to help you and your dog build new skills, overcome challenges, and take the next step on your journey together towards becoming the Super Dog team you're capable of being.
Imagine a life where your dog has the recall you've always wanted, walks nicely on a loose lead, focuses on you when you're out and about, has grown in confidence, or has overcome that obstacle you've been struggling with.
That doesn't have to be just a dream. With time, patience, consistency, and the right training, all of that can become a reality.
After all, every Super Dog has to start somewhere, and this could be the beginning of your journey together.
If you're ready to take that first step, or you simply have a few questions, then get in touch. I'll be ready and waiting to help you and your dog begin your journey towards becoming the Super Dog team you're capable of being.
Because every great partnership starts with a single step... and sometimes, that step is just a walk.
